About HIP EuropeStart in 2007HIP Europe open innovation network was founded in 2007 by Rick Wielens and Harry Sprengers with the goal to strengthen the European industrial innovation. Both founders perceived the retiring group of top technology and industry experts and executives as a major opportunity for companies and organizations. The need to involve this group of professionals is strengthened by the huge expected scarcity in Europe for science, engineering and technology resources as a result of the aging population. The expected shortage in the coming years is around 150,000 with a SE&T background. The NetworkIn a relatively short time the network was developed into an organization with over 250 qualified experts. Multiple articles were published regarding the open innovation initiative and presented in all kinds of forums like the Netherlands Academy of Technology and Innovation Platform. In 2010 the responsibility for running and managing the organization is taken over by experts in the organization. The organization is changed from a limited into a foundation. Additionally a revolutionary portal is introduced that discloses the multitude of experience and competencies possed by the experts. The portal is instrumental for companies to easily contact the technology experts and executives. Current organizationHIP Europe is a foundation with a board. The operational part and responsibility of the organization is divided over 5 clusters: Technology, Industry, Strategy and organization, Management and program- project management. The headquarters are located on the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, the former Philips research campus. HTC is the most important open innovation environment within the Netherlands producing over 50% of all registered patents. | Examples of HIP ProjectsSparring partner for managementAccelerating the businessCEO's and other top managers from both SME and multinationals have a flexible independent HIP sparring partner. This offers them a sparring partner with whom they can reflect on challenges and ideas in a trusted environment. Advise was flexible and based demand driven based on the needs of the individual manager. The frequency was defined by the individual manager. New Cooperation ProgramdevelopmentA new technology cooperation program has to be set up and made operational. A HIP expert with good technical understanding, management skills and experience with politics is asked to start up the program, have the participants all having a different agenda working together and make the program sustainable within the set constraints. Using Electronics in Vacuuminnovation and knowledge transferIt is often most efficient to have the electronics close to functioning parts also when this function is in vacuum. The first thought people have is how will the electronics be cooled and provided with connections. The second thought is the out gassing of the components not to disturb the vacuum. But next to that the out gassed particles can influence the function. The last two issued is where the experience and knowledge of a HIP expert has given the company the insight on the selection and the usage of electronic components in vacuum. We expect an order for coaching a young engineer to get a successful implementation and knowledge transfer. Venture accelerationAccelerate venturingA venture within a multinational was struggling to test the feasibility to enter the bottom of the pyramid market with a new breakthrough healthcare product. The challenge was to quickly reach a decision on continuation of the venture in with a high degree of uncertainty and complexity in required partners, feasibility of the technology used and market entry strategy. A senior C-level expert from the HIP network with a network and background in both technology and bottom of the pyramid markets together with a technology expert provided the right support and results. Within a very limited time the right partnerships and market entry were developed and feasibility of the venture confirmed. Knowledge transfer USA to NetherlandsTechnology knowledge transferA multinational bought a company in the USA with a unique technology solution. The module solution needed to be integrated locally in the larger system. The company asked for our support to create a solution for the necessary knowledge transfer. HIP created a project set-up and trained and coached the local resources on the job. A top technology expert from HIP joined the transfer team and trained and supported them locally in the USA to successfully transfer both the technology as well as the module. Bringing Products to the Marketbusiness developmentA small company for which we are constructing a new system wants to bring the product to the market. Questions arise how to do so. A HIP expert with a long experience in marketing is defining a marketing strategy and resulting exhibition and market presentation. This way a coherent and effective marketing approach was created and for the short term more relevant visitors were attracted to the stand and the promotion has become more effective. Technology top supportCoaching of developmentA development group of a company is supported on a bi-weekly basis by an expert with 30 years industry experience. The development engineers of the company can approach this expert at any time and at regular intervals he is asked to provide input for the product strategy. The questions cover multiple disciplines and domains of technology ranging from very practical to highly specialized. The value for the company is mainly the opportunity to pick the experts brain and to have an outsider perspective without interfering with their running activities. Production of Building ComponentsinnovationFor many years a company is producing concrete polyester parts for the building industry. The production is relative simple but aggressive non environmental friendly liquids have to be used to regularly clean the moulds. The moulds itself give also a problem in releasing complex parts. An experienced HIP expert will make an inventory of the requirements and possibilities within the company, but is confident that with his deep knowledge on plastics and his experience he will be able to provide a solution. The work will be done in close cooperation with the engineers to train them for future. Concept Solutionsproblem solvingHalf a year a solution is looked for to make a system again competitive on the market. Many solutions has been looked at but no breakthrough had been found. A team of HIP experts has held a workshop in which the degrees of freedom have defined. At that moment only a few could be accepted by the commercial department. However the conclusion was that the company should have done this earlier. Some additional potential solutions had been generated to let the company move forward. Surface Problem of Metal Componentproblem solvingFor many years a component had been produced in Europe and for cost reasons this production had been shifted to China. Suddenly the component surface showed bad as if the component was used for tens of years although the same material was used. The company had done several test and noticed some small changes in the production process but this could not explain the change. Also two top research institutes had studied the problem already for two months without any success. An very experienced HIP expert was able to point to the problem just by looking closely to the products within an hour. Now he is implementing the necessary actions. | NewsExpert Network Demonstrates Added ValueMore clients discover the added value of the experts in the HIP Europe network.
